Dr. Bart Begalka

With acculturation I help clients understand and deal with the emotional stresses of immigration. I also help individuals and families deal with the stresses of 1st, 2nd, and 3rd generation family dynamics. My doctoral work was in Education, with a focus on the areas of postcolonial psychology and communication between cultures. I have taught multicultural counselling at the graduate level, I have been a keynote speaker in conferences in Indonesia and Turkey, and I have consulted with mental health program development in Indonesia, India, and Cambodia.

The issues of retirement and aging have been a personal research interest of mine for the past twenty years as I have prepared for my retirement years. I retired from academics in 2020 after 16 years of teaching in a graduate program in counselling
psychology as a core faculty member, and I am currently semi-retired. I am a member of The International Council for Active Aging (ICAA), and I produce educational materials for seniors and their care-givers.

If, while coaching it becomes apparent that therapy is called for, I am also a registered clinical counsellor with 35 years of experience and can offer services in that area.

I have been a Registered Clinical Counsellor for over 30 years, including 11 years as the Clinical Director of a non-profit agency and 16 years as a faculty member in the Graduate Program in Counselling Psychology at Trinity Western University.

My counselling degree is an M.Ed. from Boston University.

I also have an M.A. from Seattle Pacific University in Christian Education which, after earning, I spent several years as a pastor. Additionally, I earned an Ed.D. from Simon Fraser University, and my research there focused on the praxis of critical theory in postcolonial relationships.
